Building Back Belief: Designing Insights That Land in Parliament

By datadesign | October 29, 2019

What happens when you approach report design for policy impact by putting citizen insight at the centre of political storytelling? You get MPs and Lords asking for a copy. Literally.

This was the reaction to Building Back Belief, a new report from the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI), launched this month across three events and making waves across the political sphere.

At AudienceNet and Data Design, we were proud to be the design partner for this project. From start to finish, the work was guided by a single idea: rebuilding trust in politics starts by listening, and showing that you’ve listened.

Report design for policy impact: making insights matter

The report draws on extensive qualitative research with UK voters who feel politically alienated or disengaged. Through long-form interviews and in-depth narrative analysis, the study uncovers a framework for re-engaging this electorate, not with slogans, but with sincerity.

Our job? To make sure the insight didn’t sit on a shelf. The report design for policy impact needed to give voice to real people and create something bold, clear, and useful, from politicians to strategists.

Report design for policy impact: Creating visibility, empathy and action

Rather than leaning into a traditional “policy paper” format, we took a more editorial, story-led approach. That meant:

  • Human-first design: Pull quotes and imagery to centre voter voices
  • Layered data visuals: Combining narrative with infographics to convey complex sentiment
  • Clean visual hierarchy: Balancing emotional resonance with analytical rigour

From cover concept to colour palette to typography, every element was chosen to feel fresh, focused, and respectful of the subject matter.

The response? Immediate and meaningful

Several MPs and Lords requested hard copies. Not just a link. Not a PDF. A report they could take into meetings, quote in speeches, and pass on. Print isn’t dead apparently!

That kind of reaction doesn’t come from design alone. It comes from insight-led storytelling that lands and report design for policy impact that amplifies voices that matter.
